A Look at the New Online Planning Tools, Date-Based Tickets Available Today at Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World has changed they way their ticketing works and introduced some new purchasing tools this morning. We took a look at the new system and wanted to provide a breakdown of what you’ll be able to find.

Like before, tickets may be purchased on DisneyWorld.com, in the My Disney Experience app, over the phone, upon arrival at any of the four parks or through authorized travel professionals such as Kingdom Destinations.

A new interactive calendar has rolled out this morning to the Disney World website that will transparently display the all-new date-based pricing based on the month and day of your first visit. Here’s a walkthrough of the purchasing process.

The first thing you’re asked to do is decide the ticket type that you want to purchase. Both in-state and out-of-state options are available for those who are logged into their My Disney Experience account and qualify.

After selecting your ticket type, you’re asked how many days you’d like to purchase. Based on your selection, you’ll see the dynamic, per-day pricing in a month view. Note in our two screenshots below, we chose an 8-day ticket and a 5-day ticket. The price-per-day adjusts accordingly on the calendar.

If your travel dates are flexible, there’s a nice addition to the tool that allows you to see what months have the cheapest tickets based on your ticket type. Simply click on “See which months offer the lowest ticket price” and a popup will show you which months are cheapest to visit.

Next, select the first day of your intended ticket use on the calendar to get a total. Note that this is a flexible price based on which days you’ll be visiting. Also note that you’ll only be able to use the tickets in a specific time window because of the dynamic pricing structure, but more on that in a bit. It seems that every ticket window is the amount of days you intend to visit, plus 3 days for a little bit of wiggle room.

The math here isn’t perfect, but is close enough to be within a couple of dollars either way depending on your ticket type.

Next, you’ll be presented with a variety of ticket upgrade options, including the “Flexible Dates Option”, which lets you use your ticket on any days on or before December 31, 2019. It comes at a cost, which we’ve noticed is basically charging you for the difference between your ticket price and the most expensive days of the year price. It’s not a discount, but does allow some flexibility should that be required by your travel plans.

That’s it! The tools are easy to use and understand. Here’s a short video and graphic Disney put out this morning to explain the new system.
