In a press conference this morning, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings continued to paint a grim picture of COVID-19 in the county. According to the Mayor, Orange County is now experiencing nearly 1,000 new cases per day, a mark that Demings notes is mirroring the highest peak of 2020 – a true step back.

Demings noted that it took a month back in 2020 for Orange County to add up 1,000 cases cumulatively. Now, we’re seeing 1,000 new cases per day, leading to the Mayor to declare, “we are in crisis mode”. Demings went on to say that “the time is now…to step up to the plate and get vaccinated”.

The 14-day rolling positivity rate sits just under 14%, more than 3x what it was a month ago. Florida as a whole accounts for 20% of new COVID-19 cases nationwide. As of July 22nd, just over 61% of Orange County residents aged 12 and older received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine – still below the goal of 70%.

As of publish time, Walt Disney World has not announced any operational adjustments following the surge in COVID-19 cases in the county. Last week, Demings urged businesses to require face masks of all patrons regardless of vaccination status. Disney World requires guests who are not fully vaccinated to wear a mask while indoors. The only area where face masks are required from all guests is on transportation like the monorail, Disney Skyliner, or buses.
