Savi’s Workshop – Custom Handbuilt Lightsaber Experience Review at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Welcome to Savi’s Workshop! Located within Black Spire Outpost is Savi’s Workshop, and hidden within the shop is the custom Lightsaber building experience. We built our own lightsaber on opening day and have a full review of the process!

Savi’s Workshop is an unassuming storefront located in the middle of Black Spire Outpost next to Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities and the Droid Depot. Savi has a group of Batuuans who will rush you into a covert workshop where they are building lightsabers under the nose of the First Order.

If you’d like to watch the full lightsaber building experience, here’s our video. For a more detailed explanation, keep reading!

When you are in line, you will be asked what theme of a lightsaber you will like to build. If you are not sure, the Cast Members will be happy to show you a preview the pieces in drawers before you pay. Once you’ve looked at your options, you will have to pre-pay for your Custom Lightsaber Experience. The price is $199 plus tax which includes the experience as well as the lightsaber, its parts and a sheath. At the cash register, you will be given your pin as well as a credential that will serve as your group number. The pin is the “key” to enter the experience and it also represents 4 different story themes that correspond to different lightsaber options.

Square Pin – Protection and Defense

Cultivated from a time forgotten, these earliest lightsaber pieces contain designs and inscriptions that are shrouded in mystery. Believed to be created for protection and defense, conferring anonymity and symbolizing emotional detachment, a lightsaber made from these pieces reconnects the user with the most ancient wellspring of the Force.

White Pin – Peace and Justice

Salvaged from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships, these lightsaber pieces were created for Force wielders of the Republic era. The simple designs reflect the commitment to the devout life of those whom they were created by – the Jedi Order – the once guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy.

Silver Pin – Power and Control

Reclaimed from the ashes of the rumored Sith homeworld and abandoned Sith temples, these lightsaber pieces were originally forged by the Sith and dark side warriors of their time. Characterized by sharp and strong forms, these pieces showcase the brutality and relentlessness of the Sith’s insatiable desire for power and control.

    Orange PinElemental Nature

As we have been told, The Force is an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together. These lightsaber pieces are born of that same Force. They are as unique as the user and as the elements of nature: the wood from a Brylark tree, a bone of the Cartusion whale or even a tooth from a Rancor.

Guests are given colored cards to represent what group they are in. Once your group is next to enter the chamber, your group will enter a courtyard to wait to be ushered inside by one of The Gatherers.

Once you enter the chamber, you will choose your kyber crystal. The options are red, blue, green, or violet. Once you have selected your crystal, the hilt kit will be given to you based off of the pin that you are wearing and you can begin to assemble your hilt.

Each hilt kit of parts includes:

    • 1 hilt
    • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
    • 2 emitters (pick 1)
    • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
    • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

Once you have finished assembling your hilt, The Gatherers will attach the 36″ blade in a bonding ceremony. Everyone rises their lightsabers in unison as the voice of Yoda enters the chamber and offers wise words as you depart Savi’s Workshop.

Overall, we felt that the experience was not only an intimate one, but also unique enough to justify the $199 price tag. We really enjoyed the whole experience. From the story telling to the space itself, it put us in the middle of our Star Wars story just as much, if not more, than any other experience in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Like most of the offerings in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you don’t have to be a huge fan of Star Wars to appreciate the experience. Of course, if you’re a fan of Star Wars and you’ve been looking forward to an extremely unique experience, this is not to be overlooked.

Demand for this experience was extremely high throughout opening day, pulling well over an hour wait all day long. The capacity here is not high, with only 14 builders allowed into one of two chambers during the roughly 20 minute experience. It seemed like there were two chambers, creating an hourly capacity of roughly 84 guests per hour. With such as small capacity, the wait times can and do spike throughout the day. If you have another traveler in your party, you can bring a single guest in with the builder.

We hope you enjoyed our review of Savi’s Workshop – Custom Handbuilt Lightsaber experience. If you have any questions, please leave us a comment either in the comments below, or on our Twitter or Facebook pages.
