Apple granted patent to disable photo and video where it isn’t permitted, long live the dark ride

We’ve all been there, enjoying a dark ride like the Haunted Mansion and just when we think our eyes have adjusted to the light, some inconsiderate guest fires off their flash to grab what is sure to be a terrible picture. This is by far my biggest pet peeve in the parks. Thanks to a recently granted patent to Apple, it could all be a thing of the past.

Patently Apple found a list of 44 patents granted to Apple and among them was the ability to turn off photo and video capture on an iPhone based on infrared signals sent to the device. The use case for the patent is a concert where video recording isn’t allowed, but we could easily see Disney wanting to get in on the action and cover entire attractions with the camera-blocking infrared signals.

To be clear, this patent only covers iPhones, but if this technology catches on with concert and movie venues around the country I can easily see something similar being applied to Android devices as well. So what do you think? Would you like Disney or other entertainment venues telling you when you can and can’t record video or snap a picture?

    1. I love the idea of rides blocking iPhone cameras, and I agree that the “random flash” mid ride is super annoying. I just wonder how much would be blocked? Would they stop at just dark rides? I assume shows and park areas would not be affected so social media marketing could live on strong.
