Hurricane Matthew cost Disney about $40 million

At the end of fiscal year conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger gave investors an estimate as to the financial impact Hurricane Matthew had on the Walt Disney World Resort back in early October. Iger noted that all parks were closed for about a day and a half and that Disney estimates the impact to be a loss of $40 million.

All of the theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, mini golf courses, and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex closed at 5pm on October 6th and remained closed on October 7th. Disney was also forced to cancel the October 6th and 7th Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties. Portions of Disney Springs did open at 5pm on October 7th. The resort resumed normal operations on the morning of October 8th.

While $40 million might seem like a lot for a day and a half, the resort was barely affected by the storm as it brushed the East coast of Florida, roughly 80 miles away. Winds in the Walt Disney World area remained below hurricane force and little to no damage occurred on property.
