Are MagicBands Coming to Disneyland Resort?

It seems like something that’s been years in the making, but we could finally see MagicBands at the Disneyland Resort.

Ever since its inception in 2013, guests have often wondered if the MagicBand would be an exclusive to Walt Disney World, or if the wearable tech would make its way to Disneyland Resort. Now, it looks like we could see them being made available, at least in a limited initial rollout, at the Disneyland Resort too. While visiting Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa recently, our friends at Discover the Magic spotted what appear to be MagicBand readers installed in the elevators.

The reader looks to be retrofitted onto the elevator, perhaps to grant access to club level rooms in the future. In addition to the reader seen above in the elevator, there are some guest rooms that have similar readers.

Now, before we get too excited about the possibility of MagicBands in Disneyland, it’s also worth noting that these could be simple RFID readers. RFID is a radio frequency that is used both in MagicBands as well as park entrance cards at Walt Disney World. It’s possible that Disney may abandon the idea of a wearable RFID tech like a MagicBand and simply go for an RFID card like our Annual Passholder cards.

Another angle that Disney could be pursuing here is that of bluetooth entry with your phone via the Disneyland App. Keyless entry with a phone is already an established technology at Walt Disney World and in the hospitality industry in general, so the RFID reader could pack some bluetooth tech inside to allow for app entry.

Of course, all of this is still speculation at this point and should fall under the rumor category unless and until Disney officially announces their plans.
