Work Underway on Grand Floridian Walkway to Magic Kingdom

At long last, guests will have the option to walk from Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort to Magic Kingdom. As tends to be the case with projects around Walt Disney World, a permit preceded the actual work for the Grand Floridian walkway. According to the permit, there will be two bridges as part of this walkway. If the walkway were to follow existing paths, the walk from the nearest Grand Floridian guest building would be about 0.7 miles to the Main Entrance of Magic Kingdom. To compare, the walk from Disney’s Contemporary Resort to Magic Kingdom is just under 0.5 miles.

The first is a stationary bridge that spans a small canal directly next to the Grand Floridian. This canal isn’t used by any watercraft, so a stationary bridge makes sense here. As you can see below, it will be located near the meeting and event space at the north end of the Grand Floridian plot.

The more interesting bridge will likely be the swing bridge that will be installed over a fairly active waterway. As you can see below, this swing bridge will span a waterway that is much more highly traveled and connect with a pathway that has been a dead end for years.

We took a lap in a monorail recently to get a look at some of the prep work being done on the site. Not only is there a crane on site, but there are some metal panels that will be used to create a temporary wall for the construction along the banks.

Here’s a look at the canal that the swing bridge will cross when the project has been completed.

As we mentioned earlier, permits usually precede any official confirmation or even work on the project. While Disney hasn’t announced the project on the their blog, an official spokesperson did provide a statement, confirming the project:

This walking path from Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will give our Walt Disney World Resort hotel Guests another convenient way to reach Magic Kingdom Park.

Here’s a look at the Magic Kingdom side of the path and the existing dead end walkway.

This new Grand Floridian walkway appears to be another step in the Magic Kingdom entrance overhaul project, aimed at making the arrival experience to Magic Kingdom an easier process. For more on the Magic Kingdom overhaul project (which just begun), check out this post detailing the permit that we found nearly 3 months ago as well as a look at the construction.
