Closing Walt Disney World and Disneyland For Two Weeks Cost Disney More Than $500 Million

On the Disney earnings call this afternoon, Disney laid out about $1 billion in losses in their Parks, Experiences, and Products segment. While the six Disney theme park resorts around the world closed on different dates, Disney further clarified that the roughly two weeks of closure for Walt Disney World and Disneyland accounted for “a little over half” of the $1 billion in losses.

This shows just how significant the domestic theme parks are to the segment’s revenue, and how crucial it will be to reopen the parks when it is safe to do so. While there are a lot of factors that play into when the domestic theme parks will reopen, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that Disney would have to see a net profitability in the operation of the theme parks with whatever social distancing measures might be put in place.
