According to the Florida Hospital Association, there are more than 10,000 patients with COVID-19 in Florida hospitals. As of January 11, 2022 there are a total of 10,792 confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations.
As hospitalizations continue to grow, it appears that new COVID-19 cases may have leveled off. Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his medical team encouraged asymptomatic people to not take COVID-19 tests.
Here’s a look at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) graphs for the Delta and Omicron surges, followed by a graph of new cases reported to the CDC since Omicron was confirmed to be in Florida in early December.
A University of Florida model suggests that new cases will peak in roughly the next week. As has been the case since the start of the pandemic, hospitalizations will follow cases and are expected to continue increasing. It remains to be seen if Omicron surge hospitalizations will top the Delta surge hospitalization peak of 17,121 hospitalizations.
Disney has not made any operational adjustments to mitigate the risk of contracting COVID-19 at its theme parks since the start of the Omicron surge. Face masks are still required indoors, but there are virtually no other mitigation efforts in effect. Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pamela Hymel has not penned a health and safety update since July 2020, with the exception of a May 2021 article about vaccines featuring The Muppets.
