As the world continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, The Walt Disney Company is building its workforce back up after sliding to pre-2016 levels. According to filings by Disney, here’s a look at employment numbers for the company as a whole over the past few years:
- 2021: 190,000
- 2020: 203,000
- 2019: 223,000
- 2018: 201,000
- 2017: 199,000
- 2016: 195,000
- 2015: 185,000
As we can see, the pandemic-era loss of employees reached its lowest level since 2015 last year. That said, Disney continues to hire talent and has nearly 3,500 job listings on its website.
In an investor call yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek gave an update on employment numbers, showing that Disney likely bottomed out last year. As of early February 2022, The Walt Disney Company employees approximately 195,000 Cast Members. That updated figure is still nearly 30,000 fewer Cast Members than 2019 highs.
We can see that the total impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, at its highest, was about 33,000 Cast Members.

That would be the pandemic era firing of their employees. Let’s call a spade a spade. They didn’t attempt to get back to normal operations fast enough and now they are paying for the loss of skilled staff everywhere.
Tell that to the thousands of employees (me being one of them) STILL not called back yet.
Where’s the real magic: LIVE ENTERTAINMENT.
Shows still yet to return:
Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue
Princess Tea
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Nemo (whatever form it takes)
Fantasmic
Citizens of Hollywood
Citizens of Main Street
And more I am sure I am forgetting.
