Report: 18% of Guests Go Into Debt for Disney Vacation

A report from LendingTree reveals that nearly 1 in 5 guests goes into debt for one or more Disney vacations, with food and ticket prices being the main named culprits. According to the report, LendingTree surveyed 1,548 consumers.

With a price hike looming at Walt Disney World, an October 2022 survey from LendingTree reveals that nearly 1 in 5 guests goes into debt to visit a Disney theme park. The survey asked guests to list expenses that were significantly more expensive than imagined, and the top responses were in-park food & beverage, tickets, and lodging. Only 20% of respondents said that Genie+ and Lightning Lane were significantly more expensive than expected. That said, the survey was conducted before variable, date-based surge pricing went into effect for Disney Genie+. Disney has not provided a pricing chart for Disney Genie+ which would help guests budget for the skip-the-line offering.

On December 8th, Disney World will significantly alter its ticket pricing by having park-specific pricing and increasing the range of prices for the surge pricing strategy that has been in place for years. The price of an Annual Pass at Disney World will also increase, although new sales of most tiers of Annual Pass will remain paused into 2023.

Of the 18% of respondents that took on debt for their vacation, 71% said that they don’t regret it, and 88% will have their Disney debt paid off within a year. Six-figure earners (26%) are most likely to take on debt and Millenials (27%) outpace other generations in willingness to take on debt.
