With the retirement of the Disney Genie+ product, Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the future of skip-the-line offerings at Walt Disney World. More than simply a renaming, Lightning Lane Multi Pass includes some system-level and policy changes that bring the product more in line with the FastPass+ days of old versus the Genie+ offering. In this article, we want to talk about how Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction tiers work, when they disappear, and how to make additional selections throughout your day at Walt Disney World.
Three of the four Walt Disney World theme parks have a tiered system for Lightning Lane attractions. Essentially, the attractions are broken into an upper-level and lower-level tiered system. As you’d imagine, the more coveted attractions are in Tier One, and the less coveted attractions are in Tier Two. For an up-to-date list of which attractions are Tier One and which attractions are Tier Two at each of the four Walt Disney World theme parks, check out our article below.
In this article, we’re going to draw from our recent visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios where we used Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and talk about how the attraction tier system works during your day at the parks.
In short, tiers apply to your initial purchase but then disappear once you have tapped into your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass experience at the park on the day of your visit. Any actions that take place before you redeem your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass are still beholden to pre-arrival rules. That means that if you want to modify any of your selections at any time before you tap into your first experience, you’ll have to follow tier rules.
In the screenshots below, you can see the attraction selection process when attraction tier limitations are in effect. The screenshots below are from the initial purchase flow. You can see that there is plenty of text describing your selection options. You can either select one Tier One attraction and two Tier Two attractions, or all three selections can be from Tier Two. You can also see which attractions are sold out for the day based on which boxes are greyed out before making selections.
As you tap on the box next to your desired attraction, the text will update, and unavailable options will be greyed out. You can see the process of selecting one Tier One attraction and two Tier Two attractions at Magic Kingdom in the screenshots below.
If you try to modify a Tier Two attraction into an ineligible Tier One position, you will be presented with an error and a description of “[Guest name] Currently has an experience from this group of selections”. You can see the screenshot error of trying to change a Tower of Terror Tier Two attraction selection into a Slinky Dog Dash Tier One below.
Once you’ve redeemed your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass experience for the day, your options are wide open. You also can make selections at any of the four Walt Disney World theme parks at no additional cost after redeeming your first Lightning Lane.
The screenshots below show the modification screen (below, left) and the standard new selection screen (below, right). As you can see, any information about tiers has disappeared.
