Disney filed plans for a major expansion to the Wide World of Sports complex today. Plans filed with the South Florida Water Management District show a multi-story building with 286,000 sqft and associated parking lot with room for over 600 parking spots.
There is no word yet on what the space might be used for, but the Disney Parks Blog did announce that Night of Joy would be moving to Wide World of Sports this year. Obviously with a building that size, it could be a very flexible space for hosting events for years to come.
Why this matters
Disney has invested a lot into a project called Flamingo Crossing which aims to provide lodging for sports teams coming to Walt Disney World with athlete friendly facilities at hotels that are being constructed there. With two of the hotels set to open soon, this expansion further exemplifies Disney’s commitment to bringing sports to Walt Disney World.
