Epcot Overhaul Preview Video Concept Art Breakdown and Model from the 2019 D23 Expo

Disney is on the precipice of a huge announcement later this afternoon, detailing the future of Epcot and what we can expect during the reimagining of the park. From our on-the-ground reporting, we’ve already seen a lot of movement as it relates to the park entrance overhaul. On Friday, we got an updated piece of concept art that largely showcased the plans for the Future World section of the park as seen below.

If the concept art wasn’t enough, a significant portion of the Disney Parks booth at the D23 Expo also has a video wall showcasing unreleased concept art as well as a model of the upcoming changes to Epcot. Our friends at DiscoverTheMagic.blog were able to capture some photos and video that we’ll dissect today.

First, here’s a look at the video that attendees were able to enjoy.

Let’s break down what’s going on in the video above. After this detailed look, we’ll take a look at the Epcot overhaul model that is on display as well.

First is the entrance overhaul that we’ve already provided ” (construction) wall to wall” coverage of. From the removal of the Leave a Legacy monoliths to the expansive construction zone outside of the front of the park for parking lot enhancements. After moving through some of the original concept art for the park, the entrance overhaul concept art is presented as released back in February.

New in the video is a ground-level piece of concept art of the entrance overhaul project. From here, we can see the new entrance fountain art and how Disney plans to replace the concrete monoliths with trees and green spaces.

The next frame of the video shows off the entrance fountain a bit better. A couple of things stick out to us here. First, the lighting from the center of the fountain art. There are certainly a lot of artistic liberties taken in these types of concept art pieces, especially for a “sizzle reel” like what was on display at the D23 Expo. That said, we hope that the lighting elements seen below can make it into the park. A single light beam shooting up from the fountain art and an updated lighting package will spruce up the entrance to the park.

Continuing the theme of green spaces, we can see that Future World will be completely different when the work is finished. Future World West, specifically, will see the demolition of the Innoventions plaza and the introduction of more natural spaces. During the media day on Friday that teased some of the upcoming announcements from this afternoon’s panel, Disney announced that there will be four “neighborhoods” that will anchor the Epcot overhaul. While Disney hasn’t officially announced the themes of the four neighborhoods, this seems like a perfect “natural world” neighborhood.

While we’ll lose the Fountain of Nations, there will still be plenty of fountains in the future of Epcot. As a matter of fact, this piece of concept art likely shows the updated Fountain of Nations which will be smaller, but still contain a show of sorts.

Out of all of the pieces of concept art released, this one with performers and an Alice in Wonderland type of vibe is the most confusing. We’re not sure where, exactly, this takes place or what is going on, but we can see Spaceship Earth in the background, so this is likely somewhere in the soon-to-be-demolished Innoventions West area.

Another obscure piece of concept art showcases an electric tree that appears to have MagicBand touchpoints as natural-looking orbs.

The next two pieces of concept art work together as a panorama of sorts, showcasing more of the Future World area. This time, it appears to show the “spine” of Future World with Minnie juxtaposed against Spaceship Earth before panning over to what looks like an updated look for the Innoventions East building that will be staying put through all of the work.

The next piece of concept art shows off an indoor dining location. This looks like it could be a quick-service dining option. It’s unclear where this will be located, but with Electric Umbrella on the chopping block, it seems like Disney would rather utilize an existing kitchen with a new look for a dining venue than build an entirely new kitchen. We should learn more in the Parks and Resorts panel this afternoon.

Here’s an updated look for MouseGear. While the location will be closing temporarily later this year, Disney isn’t looking to get rid of one of their largest and most profitable retail shopping locations. With an updated look for Future World on the horizon, more guests will be drawn to the front of the park for more than just Soarin’ and Test Track.

We’ve arrived at what is, perhaps, the most intriguing part of the Epcot overhaul project. A multi-story building is going to be built roughly where the Club Cool area is now. We hope to learn more about this structure in the panel this afternoon, but in the meantime, here’s a look at all of the concept art related to the new venue. Also, make sure that you visit us around 1:30pm EST/10:30am PST for up-to-the-minute news stories as they are announced from the Parks and Resorts panel at the D23 Expo.

Moving on, we have some new art from the upcoming Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana walk-through attraction. We’ll start with the art released by Disney first, followed up by the concept art from the video.

Next up is some updated concept art for the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster.

The remaining parts of the video showcase previously released concept art for the Space Restaurant, France expansion, and upcoming nighttime spectaculars. We expect to hear more details on all of those items today, so keep checking back with us throughout the afternoon for the latest up-to-the-minute news stories as they are announced from the Parks and Resorts panel at the 2019 D23 Expo!

In addition to the video, a model (of sorts) is on display in the booth that breaks out some of the interesting parts of the overhaul into individual pieces. It’s likely that this will be the model on display in Epcot this October for ‘Walt Disney Imagineering presents the Epcot Experience’.
