As we reported yesterday, the National Hurricane Center is tracking a potential major hurricane as it develops south of the Gulf of Mexico. Current forecast cones anticipate landfall on Florida’s west coast, likely in the “big bend” area. New today is a Tropical Storm Watch, issued for a number of Central Florida counties, including Orange and Osceola where Walt Disney World is located.
Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Walt Disney World
Earlier today, the National Weather Service provided an update that included a Tropical Storm Watch for the Walt Disney World area. This means that Tropical Storm conditions are possible in Central Florida. As far as timing, it currently looks like the worst of the weather will be Thursday, September 26th. The yet-unnamed storm is expected to strengthen rapidly today and tomorrow, becoming a major hurricane before it makes landfall in a couple of days.
The National Weather Service says that as part of the Tropical Storm Watch, wind gusts of up to 50-60mph are possible and that tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Flooding is also possible as the storm dumps some 1-4″ of rain and possibly up to 6″ of localized rain.
In terms of Walt Disney World operations, Disney has not activated any weather-related warnings to guests. That said, if you’re visiting this week, especially on Thursday, you can expect poor weather conditions including gusty wind and rain throughout the day.
