In its earnings press release today, Disney put a price on the cost of closing Walt Disney World due to Hurricane Milton, and canceling some experiences due to Hurricane Helene. In talking about FY Q1 2025 income, Disney says that “Q1 operating income adversely impacted by approximately $130 million due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton”.
Disney Loses $130 Million Due to 2024 Hurricanes
While Walt Disney World was able to keep its theme parks open during Hurricane Helene, it was forced to close its theme parks for a day and a half due to Hurricane Milton. Not only did Walt Disney World lose ticket sales, but there was some damage to the property as well. The damage was mostly limited to downed trees and lost shingles, but there was some more substantial damage at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort where a portion of the roof peeled back due to high winds.
Early media reports of Walt Disney World standing to lose $200 million due to Hurricane Milton alone proved to be overblown.
Back in 2022, Hurricane Ian cost Walt Disney World about $65 million, and in 2016, Hurricane Matthew set Disney back about $40 million.
