They’re off to the races at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, with crews littered throughout the mountain range, inspecting and working on the roller coaster track. While not officially announced by Walt Disney World, it is believed that the 45-year-old ride will get a full track replacement during a lengthy refurbishment that will last into 2026.
Earlier today, we shared some photos of the construction walls installed at the attraction’s entrance, but that’s not even half the story. The best view of the work is from the Liberty Square Riverboat until it permanently closes sometime later this year. From the Liberty Square Riverboat, we could see that crews were already crawling around the mountain, and they appeared to be focused on the roller coaster track itself. Let’s take a look!
Track Work Underway at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
As we passed by the site, we could see crews in various states of work. The most interesting work was at the top of the first lift hill, where it looked like various disciplines were present as one worker appeared to be working on the track itself. Here’s a look, starting with crews still working on securing the construction walls, and then moving onto the attraction itself.

Elsewhere, some props were tagged by Walt Disney Imagineering with either “Demo” or “Protect in Place”.
