Disney has drained Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios for a refurbishment centered on Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner. Scaffolding now wraps around a large section of the SS Down the Hatch, the boat that houses the quick-service window. Here’s a look around at the current work.
Echo Lake Drained at Hollywood Studios

The lakebed is currently bare, with only shallow puddles remaining where water once stood. Drainage hoses and pipes run across the exposed ground.
Scaffolding Surrounds the SS Down the Hatch
The most visible sign of construction sits along the boat itself. Scaffolding climbs along the vessel’s midsection. It covers the white hull down to the waterline. The scaffolding concentrates on the portion of the boat closest to the water.
Visible weathering, beyond the themed intent, shows up on the boat’s white hull paint in the drained lakebed photos. Streaks and discoloration mark panels that would normally sit below the waterline. The red hull paint below the white section also shows fading in patches. That kind of wear tracks with years of sun and water exposure.
Gertie the Dinosaur Shows Wear Below the Waterline
Draining Echo Lake has also opened up a clearer view of Gertie the Dinosaur, the concrete brontosaurus near the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. The base of the statue normally sits partially underwater. It now stands exposed above the dry lakebed, with support posts and framing visible beneath the surrounding landscaping bed.
The lower portion of Gertie’s base shows heavier wear than the rest of the statue. Faded color banding, water staining, and streaking run along the section that would typically sit below the waterline. I’d imagine that crews will take the time to address Gertie’s wear and tear as well.
Keeping Our City Beautiful
Signs posted along the perimeter fence read “Please Pardon Our Appearance” above a “Keeping Our City Beautiful” seal. The text confirms Echo Lake is undergoing a refurbishment for future enjoyment.
Disney has not detailed the full scope of work happening on the SS Down the Hatch or elsewhere around the lakebed. Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner has continued normal operations throughout the visible construction.
