As we get closer to the grand opening of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney has announced anticipated upcoming impacts to the availability of the BB-8 Cast Member parking lot during times where the lot will be needed for testing.

BB-8 Cast Member parking lot

As we exclusively reported, Disney will be using SUV-sized X-Wing drones during the grand opening event. In our exclusive report, we detailed how and why the BB-8 Cast Member parking lot is used during the drone operation. As part of the upcoming testing and flights, the BB-8 Cast Member parking lot will be unavailable during the following times:

  • December 1st, 2nd: 12am to 5am
  • December 3rd: 9:30pm to 12am
  • December 4th, 5th, 6th: 5pm to 11:30pm

What sticks out about the above schedule is that the same parking lot closures will be in place during the media event (December 4th) as will be in place during the first two days of regular operation. This could signal that guest will be able to see the extremely impressive X-Wing drones during regular park hours on December 5th and 6th.

In our original report, we made the argument that Disney would be using these as part of a media event, but that their long-term use would be unlikely. In the same report, we said that it’s possible that Disney could be interested in flying the drones “for the first few days after the opening event”. Judging by the parking lot closure schedule above, our hopes could come true. While we haven’t seen anything that would indicate these SUV-sized X-Wing drones will be used long-term in the skies above Disney’s Hollywood Studios, keep an eye out for them on December 5th and 6th, and keep your fingers crossed! Of course, that is just our speculation (and hope) at this point, and guests should not make plans to see these drones unless and until Disney makes an official announcement.
