Yesterday marked the smoothest and most efficient operations to date for any version of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. As you may know, guests are required to get a boarding group to even have a chance of riding Disney’s most ambitious attraction to date. Guests with a boarding group are then notified via the My Disney Experience or Disneyland apps when it is their turn to ride.
At Disneyland, an average of 180 boarding groups have been processed per day since the attraction opened, according to data collected by thrill-data. In the past week, that number has improved to an average of 252 boarding groups per day.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, an average of 130 boarding groups have been called since the attraction opened. A slight improvement on that number has been observed in the past week with an average of 158 boarding groups called.
If all boarding groups are created equal on both coasts, it appears that operations at Disneyland are significantly better than at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is worth noting that Disneyland is typically open an hour or two longer than Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but we don’t think that’s anywhere near significant enough to explain the differences in boarding groups processed.
Prior to yesterday, Disneyland had not broken through the 300 boarding group barrier. The previously recorded high boarding groups processed sat at 298. That said, Disneyland processed an astonishing 330 boarding groups yesterday.
With physical distancing measures removed and capacity increased, we expect to see improvements at both versions of Rise of the Resistance – which begs the question: when will standby open up?
While we’ve been on Rise of the Resistance numerous times, we maintain that the boarding group process is the single-worst daily guest experience at a Disney theme park right now. Prior to the opening of WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance was the only attraction at Disneyland or Walt Disney World that you couldn’t simply stand in line for. While Disney is likely going to lean into virtual queues and boarding groups for more attractions in the future, it creates unnecessary friction for the average guest and was one of the reasons we suggested that guests skip Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Ultimately, we hope that Disney’s Hollywood Studios can join Disneyland in figuring out how to get as many guests onto Rise of the Resistance as possible and that Disney is able to do away with the boarding group system. Hopefully a record number of boarding groups is a step in the right direction.
