Rolly Crump’s Museum of the Weird Candle Man Concept Installed at Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion

A new addition has been revealed at Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, and no, it’s not the Hatbox Ghost (yet). Back when Haunted Mansion was in its early development stages, there was an idea for something called The Museum of the Weird for Disneyland. Legendary Imagineer Rolly Crump was tasked with creating the attraction, and one of the early props designed for the ride was the Candle Man.

Candle Man can be seen on the table on the left in the photo below, and in Crump’s sketch to follow.

As you can see, the idea for the character was a humanoid(ish) figure that was actually a candle. A Candle Man. The Museum of the Weird never came to be, and with Crump’s recent passing, Imagineers have likely chosen to pay homage to Crump by installing the Candle Man figure in the attic of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion. We visited Magic Kingdom earlier today to try and capture some photos of Candle Man.

To the naked eye, he is quite tough to spot in the dark on a table next to a suit of armor. Thankfully, the Candle Man is close to the ride vehicle, so guests who know where to look have a chance of spotting him.

As tough as it was to see with the naked eye, it’s even tougher to photograph without external light (not allowed) or a ride stop in exactly the right spot. We did our best to capture the Candle Man without any of the aids above.
