With The Hall of Presidents lobby now open (but not the show), we have a closer look at some of the changes made by Imagineers during the closure. There have been a few changes to the display cases since we last documented the Presidential artifacts back in January. Here’s a rundown.
New Artifacts in The Hall of Presidents
By our count, there are three new artifacts and a few departures. Here’s what we noticed.
NEW – James K. Polk Card Game
In a display case featuring artifacts from Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and even George Washington, a new card game is on loan from the President James K. Polk Home and Museum. The card game is titled “The New World”, and it is an American History Card Game.
While James K. Polk may have been the youngest president at the time of his election, his time in office was far from fun and games. During his four years at the White House, Polk took just 27 days off – the fewest vacation days ever taken by a U.S. president. In his rare leisure time, President Polk could often be found working hard to outsmart his friends and family in trivia games such as this one, which just so happens to feature Polk himself!
The Polk card game replaced a bolo tie worn by Ronald Reagan.
NEW – Photo of John F. Kennedy with kids and horse
Another new artifact is a photo of President John F. Kennedy with his kids and a horse. According to historical information from Getty Images, the children pictured are John and Caroline, and the horse’s name is Macaroni. The photo was taken outside of the Oval Office at the White House on June 22, 1962.
In this display case, a walking stick from Benjamin Harrison and an inkwell from James K. Polk have been removed.
NEW – Anniversary Letter from Harry Truman to wife Bess
A new letter is in the same display case as the Kennedy photo. Both of the artifacts were missing informational labels when we visited. The letter from Harry Truman was written on White House paper, to his wife Bess. The letter was written on their 29th anniversary, June 28, 1948, and offers a unique glimpse into the personal life of a President.
The artifacts on display in The Hall of Presidents change from time to time, so be sure to drop by and take a look at the history of our nation, on display in Magic Kingdom.
