Earlier this week, we received a tip that the hanging corpse had disappeared from the stretching room at Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion. We stopped by Magic Kingdom to check it out for ourselves, riding the attraction multiple times and capturing photos and video along the way. Here’s what we found.
Hanging Corpse Removed from Haunted Mansion?

The History Behind the Hanging Corpse Debate
We’ll start at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion when tracing the history of the possibility of Disney removing the hanging corpse. Imagineers there have addressed the hanging corpse scene directly over the years, well before this week’s tip about Magic Kingdom.
In 2021, Imagineer Michele Hobbs told the LA Times that Disney had considered removing the hanging corpse from Disneyland’s stretching room. The company wasn’t changing the scene at that time, but Disney knew guests had complained about the imagery. “It’s been discussed for sure,” Hobbs said. She added, “It’s definitely something that we’re thinking about.”
The LA Times published a follow-up quote in 2025 from Imagineer Kim Irvine. Irvine again indicated Disney was looking at the scene. Asked whether Disney would remove the hanging corpse due to its potentially triggering nature, Irvine said, “We’re still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally. … One thing at a time.” Both quotes referred specifically to Disneyland’s version of the attraction, not the one at Magic Kingdom.
Disney has made other sensitivity-driven changes to the Haunted Mansion elsewhere. Irvine discussed Disneyland’s decision to swap the bride’s axe for a candelabra, citing “the sensitivities of people.” The history of possible change is why a tip about the hanging corpse disappearing from Magic Kingdom this week caught our attention.
Checking Both Stretching Rooms in Person
We rode Haunted Mansion three times on a recent visit to Magic Kingdom to experience both stretching rooms. The hanging corpse turned out to be difficult to see in the stretching room to the right. It was effectively impossible to see in the stretching room to the left.
The left stretching room has been the version in question. It’s possible the hanging corpse is still there. We don’t have photos or video confirming its presence in that room, though. Walt Disney World has not responded to our request for comment on the figure’s status.
Our visit lines up with what BlogMickey heard previously about the Magic Kingdom attraction. Disney told us in February that rumors of changes to the stretching room weren’t accurate. The ongoing work at the Mansion, Disney said, was limited to a standard facade refresh.
Our Lighting Theory for the Left Stretching Room
Our photos point to a lighting issue in the left stretching room. The lights positioned in the attic are meant to simulate lightning, and as they flash, guests below normally see the hanging corpse. On our visit, those lights seemed to point down toward guests rather than toward the hanging corpse, assuming the figure is still installed there. The window next to the hanging corpse was faintly lit, but the corpse itself, if it’s present, remained out of view.
The right stretching room presented a different problem. It was simply too dark on our visit to say definitively whether the hanging corpse was there. What we could see suggests the corpse remains in place. The show lighting seemed far dimmer than it should be.
