Piston Peak Model Settles Two Haunted Mansion Rumors

Where the Rumors Started
We combed through the permit filings covering this corner of Magic Kingdom well before construction broke ground. Back in October 2025, an early permit outlined 33 acres of construction impact. We used the plotted drain lines in that filing to guess at the general layout of both lands. Our exact building placements were off, but the broader shape of the lands outlined in the theory held up.
In January, a permit revealed the specific building layouts for both Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park. Among the buildings shown was a small, roughly 5,800-square-foot structure sitting directly next to Haunted Mansion. We flagged it as an interesting outlier at the time and asked whether it could be a Haunted Mansion bar or parlor. That kind of concept has worked well for Disney Cruise Line and for the Beak & Barrel in Adventureland.
The layout permit also raised a second question. Villains Land shares a backstage border with Haunted Mansion and leans into similarly spooky theming. Some fans wondered whether Disney might link the two together, letting guests walk from the mansion’s grounds straight into Villains Land. Fans also speculated that Disney might flip the entrance to Haunted Mansion, making it exclusively accessible from Villains Land.
What the Piston Peak Model at D23 Expo Showed
The Piston Peak National Park scale model was undoubtedly the highlight of the Imagineering pavilion at D23 Expo. For three days, guests poured over the detailed model. We spent considerable time studying it ourselves and chatting with Imagineers stationed at the model. Imagineers built the surrounding Frontierland and Liberty Square buildings into the model, offering context for the placement of Piston Peak National Park. That additional context included a rough rendering of Haunted Mansion itself. That scale model gave us a clearer picture of this corner of Magic Kingdom than any permit filing could.
Looking at the model up close, the small building next to Haunted Mansion is labeled as a restroom facility. That resolves months of speculation tied back to the January permit. Guests should expect a practical amenity in this spot, not a Beak & Barrel-style Haunted Mansion-themed bar, unfortunately. Here’s a look at the building as represented in the model. It sits north and west of the Haunted Mansion, right where the building was shown in the early permit filings.
The model also makes clear that Haunted Mansion and Villains Land remain entirely separate. There’s no walkway, gate, or thematic tie-in connecting the two on the model. In fact, the restroom building shown above separates the grounds of the Haunted Mansion from the entrance walkway to Villains Land. Guests will still be able to walk from Haunted Mansion toward the new thoroughfares leading into Piston Peak and Villains Land, but the mansion itself stays its own self-contained attraction, remaining part of Liberty Square.
Another piece of this puzzle also came into focus at the model. As we reported recently, a wooded pathway next to Haunted Mansion appears to be a new overflow queue for the attraction. That queue stays separate from the main walkways, and it doesn’t connect to Villains Land either. Haunted Mansion is being kept visually and functionally distinct from the new land next door.

Hopefully that restrooms structure in the model got damaged during transit and the posts holding up that roof broke off. Because if they cantilever that roof as shown in the model, in defiance of architectural logic — especially for the Rocky Mountain inspired setting — it could be Madame Leota gift shop all over again.
Yet I also noticed all the dormer windows on the lodge building are missing windows, making them pointless. So, architectural anomalies abound.
