According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, residents of Osceola County have filed a lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for DeSantis’ plans to dismantle the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID).
In the lawsuit, the residents claim that DeSantis is violating Disney’s First Amendment rights to free speech after DeSantis admitted that the law to dissolve Reedy Creek has stemmed from Disney’s stance in support of LGBTQIA+ communities.
Current law would place the $1 billion of debt that RCID has onto the state and likely onto Orange County and Osceola County. That would result in a historic tax hike on residents, according to local officials.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says that he has a plan and will unveil it in the coming weeks. Disney is reportedly working behind the scenes to attempt to keep much of their special taxing district in place while helping DeSantis save face in a situation that a majority of Americans do not support.
