As part of a limited-time partnership, Disney and Meta are bringing Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge virtual reality experience to the former NBA Experience building at Disney Springs. The NBA Experience failed to draw a crowd and didn’t make it a year, but the new MetaQuest experience nicely takes over the first floor of the building.
The NBA stuff is gone, unless you count the metal wraparound panel that hasn’t been removed from the building.
The entrance into the experience is the same as the entrance to the NBA Experience, including walking under faux bleachers.
The main atrium is a small waiting area as you wait for one of 10 play alcoves to open up.
The play areas take over the former free-throw area and each guest is given plenty of space to play while an employee ensures that you stay safe and don’t move too much.
Guests are given a brief backstory on what they’ll be experiencing during the 8-minute trial and then given instructions on how to wear the headset and use the joysticks.
Guests essentially start in a cantina and then move out into Black Spire Outpost before the trial ends. Overall, it’s not a reason to visit Disney Springs, but might be a fun thing to distract yourself with for a few minutes. The experience is free.
A small area at the exit invites guests to take a survey and get a water bottle as a gift. It’s unclear if the water bottle gift is just an opening day thing, or if it will be offered throughout the experience.
This isn’t The VOID, but it is a nice showcase of the tech available from MetaQuest.
