According to a report from CNBC, Walt Disney World is telling its lobbyists to increase efforts to influence bills that would target its Reedy Creek Development Agreement, which was agreed upon by the former Board of Supervisors for the then-named Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID). Disney reportedly started making calls to its lobbyists shortly after a press conference with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis concluded on Monday afternoon.
In the press conference, DeSantis vowed to continue his attack against The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney World. DeSantis talked about his interest in developing land owned by the now-renamed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. In a particularly confusing comment, DeSantis floated the idea of creating a state prison next to Walt Disney World.
One particularly concerning piece of legislation that Disney is reportedly keeping an eye on is SB1604 – Land Use and Development Regulations. In this bill, State Senators seek to introduce a targeted piece of writing that would work to void the Development Agreement between Walt Disney World and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. An amendment by Sen. Blaise Ingoglia added the necessary wording that would single out Walt Disney World and the specific scenario created by DeSantis’ takeover of RCID. In the most recent statement on the topic of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that he would be “glad” to sit down with DeSantis to try and iron out the problems. DeSantis, who has been traveling and touring other states recently, has not said if he’d be willing to sit down with Iger.
The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board of Supervisors will meet again this Wednesday where they are expected to void the Development Agreement with Disney World.
