Imagination Overhaul? Permit Filed for Extensive Work at Journey Into Imagination in EPCOT

It’s not quite rumor season yet, but it feels like it could be right around the corner. With the 2024 D23 Expo in August slated to be one of the most important in recent memory, Disney fans are wondering what’s next for the resort – beyond what has already been teased. Some of the more obvious announcements include an update on the DinoLand USA reimagining and Beyond Big Thunder Mountain projects. That said, Disney usually has something up their sleeves beyond just the obvious.

Earlier this month, a permit was filed for some extensive work at the Imagination Pavilion in EPCOT that might be a hint of an overhaul of the pavilion. A notice of commencement was filed for 1990 Avenue of the Stars, which is the address for the Imagination Pavilion, and the Journey into Imagination ride inside (among other offerings). The work listed is “general construction” and the contractor listed is Poli Construction LLC. Neither of those are necessarily indicative of an extensive project. What is interesting is an expiration date of November 28, 2025.

Typically, notice of commencements have a blank expiration date, which defaults to 1 year from the date it was filed. When there have been larger projects in the past, we’ve seen written-in expiration dates beyond just the standard 1-year expiration. The fact that this expiration date is 19 months into the future is significant, but it remains to be seen what the scope of the project will be.

An example of a recent notice of commencement that has a written-in expiration date that is certainly part of an extensive project is the Test Track reimagining project. For more details on that permit and project, check out our article below.

As of publish time, Disney World has not announced any plans to overhaul the Imagination Pavilion, so this article is speculative in nature. Another caveat is that the work could be for anything at the address. Other offerings that are included in the address on the permit include the DVC Lounge upstairs at the Pavilion, the Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival, and the ImageWorks post-show area (with Joy and Figment meet and greets).

    1. IIRC, the word on the street is that the plan is to bring Dreamfinder back to the attraction in some way. Granted, we already see his office at the Imagination Institute, but it’d be nice to see him back in action again.

    2. I was in Disney a month ago and this was one of the 2 things I had predicted after visiting EPCOT (both have been confirmed as in the works since)! I just found your page after my trip and I love all your content! Especially your smellephants posts! Looking forward to the future of the ride. One can only hope with the Dreamfinder cameo spotted in the new pavilion, maybe he will make a return, or at the very least, we will be able to find him in figments imagination. I believe based on recent patents the whole imagination pavilion is about to get a rehaul, and not to say too much, but I think glasses may be part of the experience
