While visiting EPCOT this morning, we couldn’t help but hear the unmistakable sound of Test Track vehicles zooming along the exterior portion of the track. Test Track is currently being reimagined and will open later this Summer with an all-new storyline and set design. Rumors indicate that the track itself will remain the same, with the only piece of concept art released so far showcasing a familiar S-curve from the previous version of the ride. That said, guests can expect the attraction to feel brand new when it opens this Summer!
First Look at New Ride Vehicles for Test Track 3.0
First, here’s a look at the concept art that we were referencing in the opening paragraph. As you can see below, the interior portion of the attraction will reflect realistic foliage and scenes, ditching the digital frontier look of the previous attraction design. Also new is the ride vehicle, which appears to be extremely sleek in the concept art when compared to previous versions of the attraction.
While visiting EPCOT this morning, we were able to get small glimpses of the ride vehicle testing. Before we get to the actual photos, let’s talk about what we heard first. While walking into EPCOT, we heard some announcements made over an attraction-wide intercom system, which meant that we would probably soon have some luck viewing ride vehicles. Indeed, just a few minutes after the announcement, we heard the first vehicles of the morning whizzing by.
While it was nice to hear the testing again after months of construction, what stood out to us the most was how frequently ride vehicles were zooming by. By my count, a ride vehicle was passing by once every 12-14 seconds. This means that the attraction was operating at full speed!
Speaking of full speed, it doesn’t look like the outdoor portion of the ride has been slowed down much, if at all. That means that Test Track 3.0 will very likely contain the same high-speed, thrilling finale of the previous versions. With no rumored changes to the track, the only thing that Disney could do to differentiate the ride experience was to play with the speed of the vehicles.
Our hope is that Disney did slow down the vehicles in the interior portion of the ride, especially if they’re going to be adding more to look at with updated scenes. That said, it is great to see that the high-speed finale will very likely remain in place.
Ok, that’s what we heard, but what did we see? In short, not a lot, because construction walls still remain in place around the entry plaza for the attraction. That said, there were a couple of spots where we could catch glimpses of the ride vehicles. First, here’s a look back at the “old” ride vehicle from the 2.0 version of the attraction.
In terms of design, the vehicles that we saw retained the same shape of the Test Track 2.0 vehicles, which is a bit disappointing. It looks like the only changes that Disney made were to wrap the vehicles in all black. The concept art made it look like Disney was going to introduce a new vehicle shape/design, and right now, it looks like that’s not going to be the case. That said, we’re leaving some space here to be surprised by Disney when the final product debuts.
Interestingly, it looks like the current black wrap on the vehicles could be temporary, as some of the vehicles have cutouts to reveal the number from the old-style wrap underneath. That said, the vehicles that are currently testing this morning are all the same old style of vehicle with some cosmetic changes. Or rather, the only thing that we can see are cosmetic changes. It was rumored that Disney would be rebuilding the vehicles to not only include the new design seen in the concept art, but to also rebuild the internals, which needed help.
We even saw one vehicle with the Test Track 2.0 wrap still installed. That will surely change soon.
With some photos out of the way, here’s some video that we shot from different angles of the ride vehicle testing. The video doesn’t contain cuts within the three different viewpoints, showcasing the frequency of ride vehicle dispatches that we saw this morning.
