New Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Construction Permit Extended Through Late Summer

As crews continue to work at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to try and hit a Spring 2026 reopening timeframe, one of the major permits for the work has been extended beyond that Spring timeframe. This is the third permit from DPR Construction to suggest a sliding reopening date. Here’s the latest, along with some context.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Permit Extended Through Late Summer

We’ll start with the latest Notice of Commencement permit before taking a look at the history of our permit tracking to try to predict a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopening date. The latest permit, filed by Disney’s Facility Asset Management department, lists DPR Construction as the contractor for the work, and “general construction” as the scope of the work.

What’s notable about this permit is the expiration date. Anytime an expiration date is entered into a permit, it invalidates the standard 1-year expiration date, and catches our attention. Typically, we see dates entered into the expiration field when the work will take longer than the standard 1-year timeframe. In this case, the permit lists a date well before one year from now, signaling that the work is expected to be completed before the date listed.

In the case of this latest DPR Construction permit, the expiration date entered is August 31, 2026. This is notable because it is the first expiration date to slip beyond a Spring timeframe. Does this mean that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will not hit a Spring 2026 reopening timeframe? Not necessarily.

It’s entirely possible that the work wraps up before the official end of Spring (June 20th). It’s also possible that the work is for backstage or non-essential elements, allowing the attraction to open before the work is completed.

That said, we haven’t seen a lot of testing, and we certainly haven’t seen any humans riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad yet, so I would imagine that Disney is targeting a very late Spring reopening timeframe.

Officially, nothing has changed from what Disney has previously announced.

In providing a bit more context as to why this permit stands out, it is the third permit from DPR Construction that offered some insight as to the project timeline. Back in January 2025, we covered the filing of a permit that had a March 13, 2026 expiration date. That was our first hint that we could be looking at a Spring 2026 opening timeframe.

Then, in April 2025, we covered another DPR Construction permit that listed an April 15, 2026 expiration date.

Now, this latest permit offers an August 31, 2026 expiration date. Again, this isn’t confirmation that Big Thunder will miss the Spring 2026 reopening timeframe, but it does signal that work will continue into the Summer.

As a reminder, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undergone a full track replacement and rebuild. While the layout of the ride is expected to remain the same, that doesn’t mean that the replacement has been without issues. Earlier this summer, we noticed an envelope test fail, indicating that guests could, in theory, touch the rockwork. It is very likely that Walt Disney World has remedied that issue by now.

When it reopens, Walt Disney World has promised that guests will be able to enjoy some “new magic” on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Updates are expected to include:

  • All-new trains
  • Refreshed Audio-Animatronics throughout the attraction
  • Returning effects that haven’t been present for years
  • Rainbow caverns that come to life at the mountain pushes back against our presence
  • Actual gold out on the mountain for the first time ever

One effect that Disney fans assumed would be part of the refresh is the exploding finale scene present in other versions of the attraction in other theme parks. While Walt Disney World hasn’t confirmed or denied that the exploding finale will come to Magic Kingdom, there are hints that it is not part of the plans.

When it reopens sometime this SpringBig Thunder Mountain Railroad will also have a reimagined storyline. In this new version of the ride, the track and thrills will remain the same, but the mines will no longer be abandoned. Instead, Disney has updated the attraction’s backstory to say that the mines are very much active, and Disney has removed references to a “ghost town” in the attraction.

The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad begins when Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region. One day, strange and unexplainable things started happening. No matter how deep the miners dug into the heart of the mountain, the forces of Big Thunder fought back.

After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine speeds up along the rickety track, then swoop around turns, drop into canyons and dart through the town of Tumbleweed.

Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!

In addition to the action and adventure we know and love, Big Thunder Mountain will feature new magic for fans to discover including a journey through the spectacular natural phenomena of the Rainbow Caverns, which may not be as welcoming as they first appear.
