  • Today’s Heat Advisory covers all of east central Florida with heat index values up to 110 degrees
  • A multi-day heatwave will bring Major to Extreme HeatRisk levels through at least Saturday
  • Isolated afternoon storms with frequent lightning and strong wind gusts are also possible today

Today’s Heat Advisory

Today’s advisory covers the entire east central Florida region, including Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. High temperatures are expected in the mid to upper 90s, with the heat index climbing as high as 110 degrees during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Forecasters are also tracking isolated showers and lightning storms this afternoon and evening. Frequent lightning, wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph, and heavy rainfall of one to two inches in 30 to 60 minutes are possible with any storms that develop, along with a small chance of an isolated gust reaching 60 mph.

Orlando is forecast to reach a mercury reading of 97 degrees today, with a 20 percent chance of rain.

A Multi-Day Heatwave Through the Weekend

Beyond today, the National Weather Service is forecasting a prolonged heatwave building across east central Florida through the weekend, driven by high pressure settling over the region. High temperatures are expected to reach the 90s each day, with the hottest readings generally inland.

Peak heat indices will range from 102 to 110 degrees through the stretch, and a widespread Major HeatRisk is forecast for the week, with portions of the area reaching Extreme HeatRisk through at least Saturday. The Extreme HeatRisk category is reserved for rare or long-duration extreme heat events with no overnight relief, one step above the Major HeatRisk level already affecting the area.

Chances of the heat index reaching 105 degrees or higher vary significantly by location from Friday through Monday. Titusville is forecast to have a greater than 95 percent chance of hitting that mark on Friday. Inland locations like Kissimmee and Orlando see their odds ease by Monday, dropping to 25 and 45 percent, respectively.

Heat Safety Reminders

The National Weather Service is urging residents to practice heat safety through the advisory period and the extended heatwave. Recommendations include:

  • Hydrate before feeling thirsty, rather than waiting for signs of dehydration
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, especially during outdoor work or activity
  • Shift outdoor activities away from the 10am to 4pm window when possible
  • Check on elderly neighbors, the sick, and anyone without access to air conditioning
  • Never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a short time

Heat related deaths are preventable, and the agency is encouraging residents across the region to take precautions for themselves and others as the heatwave continues. Additional information is available at weather.gov/mlb/heatsupport.
