Disney confirmed the official name for its Villains-themed land at Magic Kingdom during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event showcase on August 15th. As you may have imagined, the Villains-themed land will officially be called Villains Land. It will be anchored by not one, but two headlining attractions: a Maleficent-themed roller coaster and a Magic Mirror dark ride. The land has a storyline built around a corrupted Wishing Well. Disney Experiences President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and Walt Disney Imagineering Executive Creative Director Caroline May presented the update during the “Horizons: A Carousel of Progress” panel at Disney Experiences Showcase.

Villains Land Name Confirmed
Vaughn and May confirmed the new area will officially be called Villains Land. That matches the naming convention used elsewhere in Magic Kingdom, such as Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Disney said the goal was for the land’s name to feel at home within the park even though the tone and theming set it apart from its neighbors.

Villains Land brings a devious, dark version of “magic” to Magic Kingdom. Even so, the Imagineering team said it remains cohesive with the broader park’s fairytale storytelling. The land has been (publicly) in development since the 2024 D23 Expo. That’s when Josh D’Amaro confirmed a Disney Villains-themed land was coming to Magic Kingdom. D’Amaro said at the time that the project would offer two major attractions along with dining and shopping.
Wishing Well Storyline Detailed for Villains Land
Disney also revealed new storyline details for Villains Land. The villains featured throughout the land will be familiar faces from classic Walt Disney Animation Studios films. Disney said the overarching narrative, however, is a new, original story rather than a retelling of any single movie.
The story centers on a Wishing Well hidden deep in a forest guests enter after leaving Magic Kingdom’s main pathways. Under normal circumstances, Disney said, a Wishing Well represents pure and good energy. This one is different. Someone once made an evil wish at the well, corrupting the stone and breaking open its structure. The wish spread poisoned magic throughout the surrounding forest.
That dark energy has since drawn villains from across Disney’s animated library. Each hopes to claim what remains of the well’s power. Disney named Cruella, the Evil Queen, and Dr. Facilier among the villains who have used that magic to conjure new lairs for themselves. The villains have used the magic to build lairs for themselves, ranging from fortresses to gleaming palaces. Each lair reflects its owner’s personality while doubling as a space for shopping, dining, etc. Disney said the architecture of each lair reflects the style, humor, and personality of the villain who owns it.
Disney compared the land’s overall scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. That suggests a similarly expansive footprint, attention to detail, and (likely) budget/resources.
Maleficent Roller Coaster Confirmed
One of Villains Land’s two headlining attractions will be a roller coaster themed to Maleficent, the Mistress of All Evil. Riders will race through an enchanted briar patch surrounding her mountaintop fortress. The Imagineering team said the coaster will include ride elements it has not previously used on roller coasters. That positions it as a technically ambitious addition to Magic Kingdom’s coaster lineup, and a thrilling one at that.
This Maleficent theming lines up with the land’s earliest concept art from 2024. It runs counter, though, to a February 2026 report that suggested Imagineers had shifted the coaster to a family-friendly Emperor’s New Groove theme as part of a broader “bigger and bolder” redesign push. Today’s confirmation indicates the coaster ultimately kept its original Maleficent identity.
Magic Mirror Dark Ride Revealed
The second headlining attraction is a dark ride built around the Magic Mirror, the same mirror that appeared onstage earlier in the D23 presentation. Disney said guests will find the Magic Mirror in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace. From there, it transports riders into its Mirror Realm. Disney described it as an ethereal space existing on the other side of the glass.
Once inside, guests will be surrounded by a range of Disney Villains conjured by the Magic Mirror. Disney said a mix of practical set pieces and special effects will bring that realm to life. The confirmed dark ride differs from a previously reported “high-tech boat ride.” A February 2026 report indicated that ride could be Maleficent-themed and modeled on Shanghai Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure. Today’s confirmation makes clear the E-ticket dark ride centers on the Magic Mirror instead.
Villains Land Design Team and Prior Coverage
Caroline May said the Villains Land team has worked to capture the power, magic, and mischievous spirit of the Disney Villains. She added that the goal was keeping the land true to Magic Kingdom’s fairytale roots. Today’s update follows a Destination D23 2025 panel where the Imagineering team detailed the architectural inspiration behind Villains Land, including the term “Conjured Architecture,” coined after research trips to Paris and Barcelona. That panel also confirmed Disney Legend Andreas Deja is consulting on the project. Deja is known for animating villains including Gaston, Jafar, and Scar.
Construction on the northwest corner of Magic Kingdom has continued throughout 2025 and 2026. Crews have cleared land and begun early infrastructure work for both Villains Land and the neighboring Piston Peak National Park expansion. As of the most recent construction update in August, crews seemed to be using Villains Land as a materials laydown yard following land clearing. Vertical construction is not yet visible from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Disney did not announce an opening date during today’s presentation. Dining and shopping details also remain unconfirmed. We’ll continue to bring you additional details on Villains Land as they’re announced.
