Soar No More: TriceraTop Spin Farewell in DinoLand USA

TriceraTop Spin in DinoLand USA at Disney’s Animal Kingdom had its final day of operation on January 12, 2025. The spinner-style attraction will be demolished to make room for an all-new Encanto-themed attraction within the upcoming Tropical Americas-themed land set to open in 2027. In this article, we’ll say our final farewell to TriceraTop Spin in DinoLand USA.

TriceraTop Spin Farewell

Set in DinoLand USA, TriceraTop Spin was actually part of a carnival-themed subsection called Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama within DinoLand USA as a whole. The premise is that TriceraTop Spin was part of a roadside attraction area set up by local entrepreneurs Chester & Hester to capitalize off of tourists visiting the nearby Dino Institute. With a number of carnival-style games and attractions, they would be able to make a buck off of the nearby discovery of dinosaur fossils at the Dino Institute.

Other parts of Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama include the Fossil Fun Games, Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures gift shop, and the former Primeval Whirl attraction. Primeval Whirl closed in early 2020 and was planned to reopen in late March 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented that from happening, and the attraction remained closed after the theme parks reopened. Disney confirmed that Primeval Whirl would be permanently closed back in July 2020. Now, it’s TriceraTop Spin’s turn.

Spin on the corner of US 498

TriceraTop Spin sits on the corner of US 498, which is the faux road that runs through this portion of the land. In the aerial photo below, you can see the circular TriceraTop Spin attraction on the corner of the road, with a big empty plot where the Primeval Whirl attraction used to sit. Other offerings in the area include the Fossil Fun Games and the giant green Cementasaurus.

TriceraTop Spin originally had its own unique songs, but those were replaced when the Donald’s Dino-Bash overlay took over DinoLand USA. The ride also uses seasonal songs during the holiday season.

Here’s a look at the entrance to the attraction, which contains a spinning top as the thematic element. While the triceratops certainly garners all of the attraction, the spinning top is the real star of the show. Heck, the ride mechanism itself is a spinning top.

The queue has almost no theming, with the only theming really being repurposed license plates as informational signs and carnival-style lighting on the underside of the roof. The queue is outdoors, but fully covered to protect guests from the sun. The attraction doesn’t operate during inclement weather, so the roof provides a spot to wait out afternoon rain too.

There are 16 dinos, each containing two rows that typically fit one or two guests. While TriceraTop Spin has been likened to attractions like Dumbo the Flying Elephant, it’s actually closer to the Magic Carpets of Aladdin in terms of guest controls. We’ll get to that in a bit. First, here’s a look at the ride triceratops vehicles.

Here’s a closer look at the joystick in each dino. The front row takes the dino higher or lower, while the back row can tilt your dino forward or backward.

Going back to the ride itself, the center of the ride resembles on of the tops that we saw at the front of the attraction, and each dino features gold stars on its side. The main part of the body of the ride is painted yellow with red accents and a blue stripe near the top with gold stars.

We can see the carnival lights run along the arms of the spinning attraction, and comets spin near the top of the ride.

Two styles of triceratops pop out of the top of the attraction and are best seen from on the ride, but also visible from the ground. A triceratops also sits atop the ride.

TriceraTop Spin offered some nice views of DinoLand USA. Here are just a few photos from our final spin during the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.

Here’s where the Encanto attraction will go
