Disney+ Launch Day Issues Attributed to a “Coding Error”

As part of the Recode conference, Kevin Mayer, Disney’s chairman of direct-to-consumer, said that launch day issues can be attributed to a “coding issue”.

While representatives initially said that launch day error messages like the one seen below were part of “overwhelming demand” for the product, that seems to only be a part of the issue.

“It’s literally one part of the tech stack that we use in a certain way that we should use another way,” Mayer said. “It had to do with a way we architected a piece of the app.”

“As prolific as BAMTech has been, we’ve never had demand like we saw that day and what we’re continuing to see,” Mayer said. “There were some limits to the architecture that we had in place were made apparent to us that weren’t before. It was a coding issue and we are going to recode it.”

Disney has stated that they scooped up 10 million subscribers by the end of day one. While they continue to recode whatever it was, specifically, that caused so many users to report error messages, Disney has not said when the code fix would be in place.
