Hong Kong Disneyland Loses Rights to Develop Phase 2 of Resort, Possible New Theme Park

Hong Kong Disneyland will not have the option to purchase more land around its resort to develop a phase 2 that many thought could be a second theme park one day. The land purchase option, which expires September 25th, was an agreement between Hong Kong Disneyland and the government that dates back to 2000.

Under the Option Deed signed in 2000, HKITP, i.e. the joint venture company between the Government and the Walt Disney Company (TWDC) for the development and operation of HKDL, was granted the option to purchase the Site for HKDL’s possible expansion.

“HKITP’s strategic direction is to focus on the ongoing multi-year expansion plan featuring a series of new attractions that will continue to position HKDL as a premier tourism destination in the region, and help capture business opportunities upon the gradual recovery of tourism,” a spokesman for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said.

“The Government considers it prudent for HKITP to focus on the development and expansion of the existing resort in the coming few years, rather than geographic expansion into the Site,” the spokesman added.

As noted, this news does not affect projects currently in progress. Hong Kong Disneyland will reopen for a second time on September 25th after the government shut them down after their initial reopening.
