Disney Research Demonstrates “Autonomatronic” Interactive Audio-Animatronic Experience

The next level of Audio-Animatronics is in the works, and thanks to a video from Disney Research, we get a glimpse of the “Human Autonomatronic”.

Autonomatronics technology isn’t necessarily new to followers of the Disney Parks, with the first Autonomatronic shown off to the world all the way back in 2009. “Otto”, the first-ever Disney figure that could see, hear, and sense human interaction, was shown off at the Disney Parks and Resorts pavilion during the D23 Expo that year.

Autonomatronics technology is different from Audio-Animatronics technology. Audio-Animatronics technology repeats a pre-programmed show over and over again. Autonomatronics technology is driven by sophisticated cameras and sensors giving Otto the ability to make choices about what to say and do. Here’s a look back at Otto from 2009.

Now, here’s a look at the technology as it exists in 2020, with Disney Research building upon what they learned with Otto and combining it with the extremely lifelike audio-animatronic construction techniques seen in the Disney Parks today.

The possibilities of an “Autonomatronic” are seemingly endless and would definitely up the level of realism in the theme parks. Imagine a pirate turning to face you and asking you where all the rum has gone!
