The Actors’ Equity Association has issued a response to the news that the Festival of the Lion King would be returning to Disney’s Animal Kingdom this summer. While the show will be modified to promote physical distancing for Cast Members and guests alike, there will be a return of equity actors to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
To date, only a handful of the more than 700 equity actors laid off by Disney have returned to the parks. From the Frozen Sing-Along to the Dapper Dans to Savi’s Workshop, the return of equity actors could be described as a slow and deliberate pace.
Here’s what the Actors’ Equity Union had to say about the news:
Equity is pleased that Walt Disney World continues to find safe ways to bring live entertainment back to the parks, in particular this Celebration of the Festival of the Lion King.
The Festival of the Lion King is a favorite for cast members and guests alike, and its return offers an important ray of hope while the vast majority of our members who work at Walt Disney World remain laid off because of the pandemic.
The Walt Disney Company and Actors’ Equity Association had quite a public spat over the summer last year that ultimately ended with more than 700 actors laid off.
