According to Disney, Splash Mountain will be closing on January 10, 2022 at Disneyland. As you may know, Disney has announced that the attraction will be reimagined as a Princess and the Frog ride as part of Disney’s Diversity and Inclusion initiative.
The announcement was made back in June 2020, and while Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said that Disney fast-tracked the development of the attraction, very little has been said or seen as it relates to the new version of the ride.
Now, Disneyland has announced that the attraction will be closed for “refurbishment” on January 10, 2022. An end date for the refurbishment wasn’t given.
At this point, there will be plenty of speculation that this is the refurbishment that will see Splash Mountain transform into an unnamed Princess and the Frog attraction, but Splash Mountain may be overdue for an annual refurbishment.
Splash Mountain typically closes at the beginning of the year for an annual refurbishment after the holiday crowds have dispersed and temperatures have dropped. Disney has not announced that this refurbishment will be the “big one”, and they have only produced two pieces of concept art so far. Without further comment from Disney, it’s too early to say if Disneyland’s Splash Mountain is closing forever, or just for an annual refurbishment.
At Walt Disney World, there are no refurbishment dates posted for Splash Mountain and Magic Kingdom President Melissa Valiquette has said that “it’s going to take us some time” for guests to see progress.
