New Parking Lots Coming to EPCOT

According to a permit filed with the state of Florida, Walt Disney Imagineering has plans on creating new parking lots at EPCOT. The permit, which lists the current Imagine Parking lot site as the address, calls for the Hubbard Construction Company to “provide new parking lots at EPCOT”. Hubbard Construction is a giant in the Central Florida landscape, having been tasked with projects such as the Monorail system and Bay Lake Lagoon project in the 1970’s.

The permit, which offers little details beyond a broad description of the work, does (interestingly) list August 31, 2023 as the expiration date, which is beyond the standard 1-year timeframe for a permit. This extended date generally gives us a better idea of the planned end date of a project. It’s likely that Disney wants to have this work completed by the end of fiscal 2023, which ends around October 1st. It’s also possible that this work needs to be completed by the time the World Celebration construction wraps up, which Disney has previously said will be in 2023.

Another unknown is the purpose of the parking lot. It’s possible that this lot may never see guest use. Currently, some Cast Members working at EPCOT use the Imagine Lot, which is the location listed in the permit. It’s possible that a new lot could be constructed in a previously forested area near the giant Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind building. Construction trailers and the like are removed from a staging area that seems like prime real estate for a new parking lot. Additionally, a berm is being created right now in the general area of the Cosmic Rewind building. This berm could be another signal that this new parking lot, whatever its function, could end up near the Cosmic Rewind gravity building.

Here’s a photo from friend of the site Bioreconstruct, that shows the area where a new parking lot could go. In the center of the photo, we can see the empty lot “behind” the massive blue gravity building for Cosmic Rewind. This area is close to the location listed on the permit, and seems like an easy spot to create a new parking lot. Other parking lots at the bottom of the image are for Cast Members and Imagineers to access their blue warehouse seen across the canal.

Disney has not formally announced this project yet.

      • I once read that Walt was always against multi-level parking near parks. Since Disney Springs is a shopping venue those lots are ok.
