The Walt Disney Company Signs Open Letter in Support of “Respect for Marriage Act”

The Walt Disney Company is among the list of more than 170 companies that have signed an open letter in support of the Respect for Marriage Act. The letter was part of a mobilization effort by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to get businesses to show support for a bill that it says will “codify federal marriage equality by guaranteeing the federal rights, benefits, and obligations of marriages in the federal code; repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA); and affirm that public acts, records and proceedings are recognized by all states.”

The letter is the latest action taken by The Walt Disney Company to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community after a series of missteps back in March that actually led to the Human Rights Campaign to reject a donation from Disney after Disney CEO Bob Chapek attempted to keep the company neutral over the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida.

Since the “Don’t Say Gay” bill was signed into law, Disney has taken a different approach to legislation, becoming vocal in its support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Industry watchers draw a straight line between Disney’s opposition to DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” bill and an effort by the Florida Governor to dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

Comcast NBCUniversal also signed the Respect for Marriage Act letter after largely escaping criticism for remaining silent over the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
