UPDATE: Tropical Depression Nine Now Forecast to Hit Florida as Major Category 3 Hurricane

The National Hurricane Center has issued a new update for Tropical Depression Nine that now calls for a rapid intensification of the storm in the coming days as Florida remains squarely in the middle of the cone of uncertainty.

The significant update to the 11am advisory is that Tropical Depression Nine (TD9) is now expected to make landfall in Florida as a major hurricane. This means that it is expected to be at least a category 3 storm with sustained winds of more than 110mph. Here’s a look at the latest forecast, with the “M” denoting a major hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) notes that TD9 is forecast to move over western Cuba and then approach the Florida peninsula at or near major hurricane strength. The NHC notes that it is too soon to determine the exact magnitude and location of the impacts, residents of Florida and Cuba should have a plan in place and closely monitor the forecast through the weekend.

Disney World has not announced any modifications to operations yet, but we will continue to keep you updated on TD9 as it progresses.
