70% Of Disney’s Investment Over the Next Decade at Theme Parks Will Be for Expansions

In an earnings call this afternoon, new Disney CFO Hugh Johnston noted that Disney continue to spend roughly $60 billion in the Disney Experiences business over the next decade. One new point of interest brought up by Johnston is that of that $60 billion, 70% of that figure will be for “incremental capacity expanding investments around the globe”.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously said that he would prefer to expand the theme parks over packing more guests into the parks or increasing ticket prices significantly. Iger noted that expansions like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Pandora – The World of Avatar are great ways to grow the theme park business.

In terms of expansions, Disney has announced a few plans for Walt Disney World, and has an ambitious plan for the DisneylandForward project out at Disneyland. At Walt Disney World, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro has outlined ideas for a DinoLand retheme at Animal Kingdom, and the continued interest in the Beyond Big Thunder Mountain project at Magic Kingdom.

Of course, Disney is in a bit of a holding pattern at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, in the near term.
