Disney CEO Bob Iger Dodges Question About New Theme Park at Walt Disney World

During an earnings call this afternoon, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked about future investments in the theme parks and the timing of such investments. As part of a multipart question, one analyst asked Iger about rumblings that the company was considering a “fifth gate” at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.

Iger chose to offer insights into the other parts of the question but completely avoided answering or mentioning the possibility of a new theme park at Walt Disney World. It’s worth mentioning that it is extremely unlikely that Iger would announce a fifth gate during a Q&A session during an earnings call, but the call was generally devoid of any substantial park news or even tidbits at a time when competition in Orlando is heating up.

Down the road, there is a lot of hype surrounding Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe theme park, which is opening next year. At this point, it’s far too late for Disney to have an “answer” ready in time to compete with Epic Universe, but there is still plenty of money earmarked for theme park investment over the next decade.

During the call, it was announced that of the $60 billion that Disney plans on investing in the parks and experiences division of the company, 70% of the money will go toward capacity-increasing expansions.
