The Disneyland Resort has filed some interesting permits, suggesting that projection mapping could be coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The permits, which call for the installation of new projectors in four locations around the land, were filed today with the city of Anaheim.
Projectors Permitted for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Projection Mapping On the Way?
The projectors will be located on the following buildings:
- Oga’s Cantina
- Smugglers Run
- Village Shops
- “Souk Market”
Other details are scarce at the moment, but each of the permits calls for the installation of a new projector, which appears to be different than simple lighting. Disneyland did not return a request for comment about the permits or any plans for Galaxy’s Edge.
If there are new projectors and projection mapping, we could see some sort of integration to breathe some life into the spires of Black Spire Outpost, or even some upper levels of the shops within the Marketplace section.
Additionally, we could envision some sort of projection mapping effects to supplement the Fire of the Rising Moons offering, which pairs music and story elements with the nightly Disneyland fireworks show that is visible from within the land. It’s probably also worth noting that projection shows are immune to winds at higher elevations, whereas fireworks are not. This is especially important now that there is a fireworks dining event at Docking Bay 7.
Currently, there are no environmental projection mapping effects available within the land that we’re aware of, so the introduction of projectors in these new locations would suggest that something is in the works to enhance the Star Wars-themed land.
There have been no similar permits filed for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios that we’re aware of.
