A report from NPR adds Disney to a list of companies either scaling back or dropping diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from investor reports. In Disney’s case, they have scaled back the number of initiatives listed in the report, which was filed in November 2024. The changes include removing references to Disney’s Reimagine Tomorrow program and adding the Heroes Work Here veteran hiring program to the list of DEI initiatives.
Disney Scales Back DEI Mentions in Investor Report
The first mention of diversity and inclusion in an annual report from Disney came back in 2020 when Disney announced the first steps of what would become the Reimagine Tomorrow program. By the 2021 annual report to investors, Disney had launched the Reimagine Tomorrow program, which “build on Disney’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and features a website, Disney’s first large-scale platform for amplifying underrepresented voices”. Mentions of Reimagine Tomorrow continued in the 2022 and 2023 annual reports, along with roughly a half dozen other initiatives that Disney listed under its DEI section.
However, the most recent annual report from November 2024 scales back the DEI section to just three bullet points and removes mention of Disney’s Reimagine Tomorrow website, which Disney says is meant to “amplify underrepresented voices”. A new addition to Disney’s DEI section is the Heroes Work Here program designed to “hire, train and support U.S. military veterans”.
NPR said that a Disney spokesperson declined to comment on the change.
Other items removed from the DEI section in Disney’s investor report include:
- Employee development programs and fellowships for underrepresented talent
- Innovative learning opportunities, which spark dialogue among employees, leaders, Disney talent and external experts
- The Disney Look appearance guidelines, which were updated to cultivate a more inclusive environment that encourages and celebrates authentic expressions of belonging among employees
Of course, just because Disney is scaling back the number of DEI programs outlined in the investor report doesn’t necessarily mean that Disney has dropped those programs. That said, Reimagine Tomorrow has been mostly silent since last Fall, and Disney appears to have launched a new DEI section on its website called “Belong”.
