In a letter to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr outlined an investigation into Disney and ABC over its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. The letter informs Iger that an investigation has been opened. Here’s the latest.
FCC Investigates Disney Over DEI
In the letter, Carr says that he wants to ensure that Disney and ABC have “not been violating FCC equal employment opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination”. Carr says that he has seen reports of Disney sunsetting DEI programs, but he says that “significant concerns remain”.
Carr calls Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs “discriminatory initiatives”, and that he wants to look into whether or not Disney’s DEI programs “complied at all times with applicable FCC regulations”.
Carr makes a similar argument seen in various corners of the internet, saying that something has recently changed at Disney, pointing the finger at Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. Carr accuses Disney of going “all in” on “invidious forms of DEI discrimination a few years ago”, saying that it “infected” many of Disney’s decisions.
The letter from Carr then goes on to outline changes within the company, including whistle-blower allegations. Carr also pointed the finger at the “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative, calling it a “mechanism for advancing its DEI mission”. Carr took issue with “Inclusion Standards” at ABC, noting that Disney has made a concerted effort to ensure that characters reflect “underrepresented groups”.
Carr acknowledges recent changes at Disney with regard to DEI programs, but he remains concerned that the underlying policies have not changed in a fundamental manner.
Carr ends his letter by pointing to actions taken by President Trump to end DEI programs at a federal level. Carr notes that the FCC has ended its own DEI programs, and says that he is pleased to see other companies taking steps to end their own Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs.
The FCC will be engaging with Disney to obtain an accounting of Disney and ABC’s DEI programs, policies, and practices.
