As crews continue working near the exit to the currently closed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster at Magic Kingdom, a new structure is under construction. The structure appears to be some sort of cover for what will eventually be the exit walkway to the popular attraction. The work is nearby, but appears to be unrelated to the Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park expansion in Frontierland. Here’s a closer look!
New Structure Under Construction at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
We spotted the new structure while keeping an eye out for vehicle testing. As a reminder, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is scheduled to reopen this Spring at Magic Kingdom. An exact reopening date has not yet been identified. The attraction has been closed for nearly a year as crews worked on completely replacing the roller coaster track, among other changes.
As you can see, the structure is being built near the exit to the attraction, and appears to fully cover what will be a walkway when work is complete. The structure doesn’t appear to be terribly robust at this point and could be temporary. It’s unclear what the purpose of the structure is, but we’ll keep an eye on it in the coming weeks to track any changes.
Starting with a vantage point from near the Diamond Horseshoe, here’s a look across the Rivers of America construction site toward Big Thunder.
It looks like there could be some work on nearby curbs as well. This entire area has been leveled and regraded to accommodate the nearby grading project at the Rivers of America for the upcoming Cars-themed expansion to Frontierland.
From a vantage point closer to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, we can see that the new structure appears to cover what will eventually become a walkway for the exit to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction.
