Large Crane Dominates Hollywood Studios Skyline for Construction of Monsters Inc. Roller Coaster

On a recent visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we couldn’t help but notice that a large crane now looms over the construction site of a new Monsters Inc. roller coaster. The new roller coaster is part of the transformation of the Muppets Courtyard into Monstropolis from the Monsters Inc. franchise. Here’s a look!

Large Crane Arrives for Monsters Inc. Roller Coaster Construction

The large crane is visible not only from Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but from other parts of Walt Disney World property as well. We first spotted it after leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom for an update on the demolition taking place in DinoLand USA.

Here’s a quick refresher on the new Monstropolis land and “door vault” roller coaster coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Picking up after the events of Pixar’s beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly.

Monsters Inc. Land will feature a brand new suspended roller coaster that will take guests through the door vault as seen in the movie.

Ok, let’s start with a look at the crane from the Hollywood Studios parking lot before heading into the park for a look at how it impacts sightlines from different lands.

In terms of where the actual crane is located, we’ll turn to recent photos from Bioreconstruct before the crane arrived. In the photo below, we can see the construction site for the massive building that will house the indoor roller coaster.

From what we can tell, the crane appears to be located on the west side of the site, which would be near the lower left of the site as oriented in the photo below.

If we had to guess, the arrival of the crane would suggest that we’ll start to see the roller coaster take shape. The question is: will the building be built first, or will the roller coaster be built first? We’ve seen Disney take both approaches over the years.

With TRON Lightcycle Run, Disney built the roller coaster first, followed by the building. With Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Disney hid the roller coaster construction by constructing the building first and then the roller coaster.
