Disney Patents Dynamic Canopy System for Theme Parks & Beyond

A new Disney patent outlines an idea for a dynamic canopy system. This dynamic system would be a motorized installation where a canopy could be deployed or retracted based on environmental conditions. Here’s a closer look, and a look at how Disney could utilize such a system in its theme parks in the future!

Disney Patents Dynamic Canopy System

Generally, Disney describes a modular system that would support the dynamic deployment of a canopy to protect guests from environmental elements. The canopy could be dynamically deployed as a rain storm approached, or when the sun is at its most aggressive. When not in use, the canopy could be retracted to prevent visual impact on theming and sightlines.

Patent: canopy retracts into column when not in use

The patent describes a system of columns, connected by tensioned lines or cables. These cables would form a configurable, overhead network that can be adjusted depending on the needs of the venue.

Unlike fixed structures like the one seen in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge below, the dynamic canopy system outlined in the patent emphasizes flexibility. The canopy can be deployed across different environments, repositioned, and fine-tuned to accommodate changing entertainment offerings.

One of the most interesting and exciting implementations includes dynamically changing the positioning of the canopy throughout the day to ensure that a specified area remains under shade no matter where the sun is positioned.

As seen in the patent screenshot below, the canopy and support columns could be adjusted in height and orientation throughout the day to provide constant shade over an area as desired.

Patent: dynamic canopy can provide coverage throughout the day

One of the stated goals of the dynamic canopy system is to provide protection from the elements when needed, but then to hide away when not needed. This would allow for the theming of an area to shine, but then also allow Disney to have the ability to deploy the canopy for guest comfort – all without the need for a permanent shade structure.

One screenshot shows how the columns could be themed to palm trees. This implementation could be used at the water parks or even Disney Cruise Line’s private beaches to provide protection when it rains, but then retract to allow some tanning, all without the need to move your chair and staying in theme for the area.

Of course, the towers could be used for more than just the dynamic canopy. In the patent screenshot below, we see Disney showcasing how the towers could be utilized to house show lighting or speakers in addition to the dynamic canopy system.

With Summers seemingly getting hotter, and the sun more unrelenting, we’re hopeful that Disney is able to find a way to implement this dynamic canopy system throughout its theme parks. The nature of it being retractable makes it particularly interesting for installations beyond where a typical shade structure might be. Furthermore, the use of a dynamic canopy would be great for extended queues or the like, protecting from not only sun, but from rain as well.
