A NEW LAND & A NEW STORY: MONSTROPOLIS TODAY

Following the events of the Monsters Inc. movie, Monstropolis now runs on laughter rather than screams. That shift changed more than the city’s energy supply. It changed how monsters viewed humans entirely. You see, screams weren’t just something from humans – the monsters were scared of us as well! Before the events of the Monsters Inc. movie, humans were seen as dangerous, toxic, and completely off-limits.

However, when Sulley and Mike Wazowski discovered that laughter generates more power than screams, fear gave way to curiosity across Monstropolis. Caution gave way to connection. The strict separation between the monster world and the human world began to break down. Disney says monsters across the city started seeing humans differently, and for the first time, the doors between the two worlds no longer felt like barriers. What started as a breakthrough inside Monsters, Inc. quickly became something much bigger: a citywide shift in how monsters viewed humans.

Disney is telling this backstory through an in-world newspaper called the Monstropolis Horn. The paper describes a “historic decision” unfolding in the city, one that sets up the reason human guests can enter Monstropolis at all.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RELATIONS

To manage the relationship between monsters and their new human visitors, the city established the HR Department. That is, the Department of Human Relations. Disney describes this new institution as responsible for helping monsters better understand humans as welcomed guests.

The newly developed department has been spearheading a moment that was once thought impossible: inviting humans into Monstropolis for the very first time. And that invitation has a name: H.U.M.A.N. Day

H.U.M.A.N. Day is the event that frames the entire land.

H.U.M.A.N. DAY

H.U.M.A.N. Day stands for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice.” Disney describes it as part celebration, part cultural exchange. The event marks the first time humans receive an invitation into Monstropolis, and it gives guests a reason to be there within the land’s story. H.U.M.A.N. Day is designed to introduce humans to life inside Monstropolis while helping monsters discover that humans are not so frightening after all.

According to Disney, guests will explore the city, meet its citizens, taste unique cuisine, and experience everyday life in Monstropolis during H.U.M.A.N. Day.

HARRYHAUSEN’S AND THE GLOB THEATER CONFIRMED

Disney confirmed two specific locations inside the land that have shown up in concept art but have not been officially announced. Harryhausen’s, the restaurant from the original Monsters, Inc. film, will operate as a dining location inside Monstropolis. The Glob Theater is also confirmed, though Disney has not detailed what experience it will house beyond a “theater show”.

Disney says both locations, along with storefronts and other city details, bring the world of Monstropolis to life with personality and character.
